ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the attitudes of Chinese medical students toward the elderly and their willingness to practice in geriatrics, and to investigate the influence of geriatrics education on their attitudes. Methods:Medical students studying diagnostics in four medical universities were enrolled in a cross-sectional survey and, for the intervention study, graduate trainees from non-geriatrics specialties taking a geriatrics course were interviewed before and after the course. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect general information, the experience of interacting with the elderly, attitudes towards the elderly and the willingness to develop careers in geriatric medicine.Changes in attitudes towards the elderly and their willingness to practice in geriatrics before and after the 40-hour geriatric medicine course were compared. Results:A total of 648 medical students completed the cross-sectional survey, with the highest score in compassion for the elderly(3.54±0.54)and the lowest score for medical services for elderly patients(3.36±0.78). Only 2.2%(14/648)of the students showed strong interest in geriatric medicine. The results of the intervention from 42 graduate trainees showed that the average scores of revised Geriatric Attitude Scale(r-GAS)were 3.80±0.43 and 3.92±0.40 before and after the course, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant( t=2.148, P=0.038). At the end of the course, 7 trainees(16.7%, 7/42)showed great interest in geriatrics, significantly different from 2 trainees(4.8%, 2/42)before the course( χ2=8.211, P=0.025). Conclusions:Chinese medical students show a serious lack of interest in geriatrics, and geriatrics education can improve their attitudes towards the elderly and their willingness to work in geriatrics. With the rapid population aging in China, it is urgent to strengthen the education of geriatric medicine.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most lethal subtype of breast cancer owing to high heterogeneity, aggressive nature, and lack of treatment options, which has a substantial deleterious effect on patients' lives. HOXD antisense growth-associated long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) (HAGLR) plays tumor-promoting roles in many cancers. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of HAGLR in TNBC. @*Methods@#Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assays were used to examine the expression of RNAs. Functional experiments were conducted to test the biological behavior of TNBC cells. Moreover, MS2-RNA immunoprecipitation, luciferase reporter, and RNA pulldown assays were conducted to verify the binding relationship between HAGLR, microRNA-143-5p (miR-143-5p), and serine- and arginine-rich splicing factor 1 (SRSF1). @*Results@#HAGLR was found to be highly expressed in TNBC tissues and cells, and inhibiting HAGLR suppressed cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and promoted cell apoptosis in TNBC. Meanwhile, miR-93-5p was shown to bind to HAGLR and SRSF1. In addition, SRSF1 plays an oncogenic role in TNBC. Importantly, HAGLR could activate the Wnt signaling pathway by sponging miR-93-5p to upregulate SRSF1; thus, accelerating TNBC progression. @*Conclusion@#HAGLR could promote the progression of TNBC through the miR-93-5p/SRSF1 axis to activate the Wnt signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Apelin is a specific ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor APJ, which is expressed in many tissues and has a variety of biological functions, playing different roles in different tissues. High doses of Apelin in the ventricle of hypothalamus can promote hepatic gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, and participate in the development of diabetes. In the peripheral target tissues of insulin, Apelin can improve insulin resistance by regulating tissue metabolism. In gut systems, Apelin can affect the maturation of digestive organs in young rats, and has no significant effect on the feeding and body weight of mice. Apelin can promote glucose into muscle tissues and improve the glucose tolerance. In addition, Apelin also has protective effects on cardiomyocytes and nerve cells. The in-depth study of the Apelin regulating mechanisms on metabolic of type 2 diabetes can help to fully evaluate the value and risks of Apelin in the treatment of diabetes.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the palatal rugae individual-specific properties and stability before and after orthodontic treatments for investigating the reliability of palatal rugae for individual identification of forensic dentistry based on the palatal rugae model ananlysis. Methods Maxillary models of 70 patients were obtained before and after orthodontic treatments respectively. Palatal rugae morphologic changes and individual identification were examined by model analysis including changes in number, orientation, shape, and length of palatal rugae, as well as mesial and distal endpoint displacement in the anterioposterior(AP) and mesiodistal (MD) direction. Furthermore, The examination of palatal rugae average match accuracy(%) was performed between the pre-treatment and post-treatment orthodontics models and post-treatment and duplicated post-treatment orthodontics models. Results ① The palatal rugae morphological changes were found and the incidence of palatal rugae changes were showed in length(28.6%), segmenta-tion(4.3%); unification(2.9%); orientation(1.4%) and shape(1.4%) after orthodontic treatment. Also the displacement of the distal endpoint of palatal rugae was 45.7% for anterioposterior indirection, 40% for mesiodistal indirection after orthodontic treatment, while the anterioposterior displacement of the mesial endpoint of palatal rugae was 32.9% and mesiodistal displacement was 17.1%. ② The identical palatal rugae patterns were not found both the pre-treatment and post-treatment groups. ③ The palatal rugae average match accuracy was 92.19% between pre-treatment and post-treatment groups, however, the rate had increased by 99.05% when matching the palatal rugae patterns of post-treatment groups to their duplicates. Conclusion Palatal rugae patterns have the high specific properties to each indivi-dual. Although there are some changes in morphology of palatal rugae after orthodontic treatment, it still can be used as a novel method for individual identification in forensic dentistry.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:Heat Induction Typodont System (HITS) and Double-Slot Lingual Bracket System are patented products of the research group. It is very important to explore a good control of anterior tooth torque on the micro-implant-double-slot lingual bracket system.OBJECTIVE:To provide the experimental basis for force system applied for controlling the anterior tooth torque in lingual orthodontics through Typodont experiment based on the HITS.METHODS:Sixteen Class Ⅱ1 maxillary Typodont models without first premolar were made.Micro-implants were implanted in the lingual region of posterior teeth and labial region of anterior teeth. The direction of the retracting force was adjusted by changing the position of the lingual micro-implant (with a distance of 4,8 mm from the alveolar crest) and the length of the hook (4,8 mm).And lingual retracting force (150,300 g) and labial intruding force (50,100 g) were loaded. The tooth movement by HITS was simulated and the models were scanned before and after force loading. Then the three-dimensional images were reconstructed by Mimics 17.0.Factorial variance analysis was adopted to compare the anterior movement changes under different loading modes.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:When the length of the hook was 4 mm/8 mm and the lingual micro-implant was 6 mm/10 mm from the alveolar crest, the displacement difference between the incisal edge and the root of the anterior teeth was smaller than other groups. The optimal mechanics was 150 g for the lingual retracting force and 100 g for the labial intruding force. It could provide a satisfactory control to the anterior teeth torque when retracting force and labial intruding force were loaded at the same time during the space closing phase of lingual treatment. This study based on HITS provided a scientific basis for the clinical application of micro-implant-double-slot lingual bracket system in space closing phase.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this investigation was to assess the in-vitro interaction of two antifungal agents, econazole-nitrate and chelerythrine, against ten fluconazole-resistant clinical isolates and one ATCC type strain 10231 of Candida albicans. The checkerboard microdilution method was performed according to the recommendations of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, and the results were determined by visual examination. The interaction intensity was tested in all isolates using the fractional inhibitory concentration index [FICI]. These experiments showed synergism between econazole-nitrate and chelerythrine in antifungal activity against C. albicans, and no antagonistic activity was observed in any of the strains tested. Moreover, time-kill curves were performed with selected strains to confirm the positive interactions. The similarity between the results of the FICI values and the time-kill curves revealed that chelerythrine greatly enhances the antifungal effects of econazole-nitrate against isolates of C. albicans. This synergistic effect may markedly reduce the dose of econazole-nitrate required to treat candidiasis, thereby decreasing the econazole-nitrate toxic side effects. This novel synergism might provide a potential combination treatment against fungal infections

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the levels of Th1 and Th2 type cytokines in 3-nitrobenzene sulfonate(TNBS) and oxazolone(OXZ) colitis without or with Trichinella spiralis( T. spiralis) infection. Methods Female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: 50% Ethanol, T. spiralis only, TNBS or OXZ,T. spiralis +TNBS or OXZ(at least 6 in each group when mice were killed). The levels of IFN-γ, IL-12,IL-4, IL-10 in colon in mice with colitis induced by TNBS or OXZ without or with T. spiralis infection 3 d and 7 d post-induction were assessed using ELISA method. Results Colonic protein levels of IFN-γand IL-12 were significantly increased 3 d and 7 d after intra-colonic injection of TNBS( P <0.05 ). Concurrent infection with T. spiralis prevented this rise in IFN-γand IL-12 secretion and tended to induce a rise in colonic IL-4 and IL-10 content(P <0. 05). The levels of IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 protein in colitic mice colon with prior nematode infection on days 3 and 7 post-induction of colitis were significantly higher than that seen in colitic mice without prior nematode infection ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion T. spiralis infection significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis in mice. The local immunologic mechanism is that T. spiralis can down-regulate strongly Th1-type immune response of colitis and up-regulate Th2 response, Tr1-cytokines. According to the change of Th1/Th2 cytokines, prior T. spiralis infection doesn't reduce the severity of OXZ-induced colitis, but without aggravating colitis. The exactly immunologic mechanism deserve to be explored deeply.

Objective To observe the relationship between morphological and hemodynamic changes of female internal genital organs in the patients with hypomenorrhea with transvaginal color Doppler ultrasound (TVCDS). Methods Thirty female patients with hypomenorrhea of unknown origin were studied, and 30 healthy women of eumenorrhea aged 20 to 40 years were selected as control group. The size and shape of uterus, ovaries, and the thickness of endometria of uterus were observed with TVCDS in follicular phase, ovulation phase, luteal phase and luteal atrophy phase, respectively. Hemodynamic parameters of ovarian artery, uterus artery and their branches were measured. At the same time, hormones of female were examined in 30 patients in follicular phase, ovulation phase and luteal atrophy phase, respectively. Results ①No difference of the size of uterus and ovaries, the thickness of endometria and the amount of egg follicles was found between two groups (P>0.05). ②Compared with that in the control group, type C of endometria increased in hypomenorrhea group (P<0.05). ③RI, PI and S/D of spiral arteries in hypomenorrhea group were higher than those in control group, but no significance in these parameters of uterine arteries, arcuate arteries and radiate arteries was found. RI of uterine arteries, arcuate arteries and radiate arteries decreased successively. ④RI, PI and S/D of ovarian arteries in hypomenorrhea group was higher than those in control group in ovulation phase (P<0.05). Conclusion Reduction in blood supply of ovary and endometria may be the causes of hypomenorrhea with unknown origin. TVCDS can be used as a conventional examination method for these patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the relationship between impaired glucose regulation(IGR)and the degree of atherosclerosis(AS)on Lacunar Infact(LI)patients. Methods A total of 83 patients with LI confirmed by CT or MRI were collected and divided into 3 groups by their fasting blood glucose, and their medical history and physical examination, the fasting blood lipid, acidum uricum and INI profile were evaluated with an automatic biochemistry machine.By employing a high resolution B-mode ultrasonography the intimae smoothness,intimae-media thickness(IMT)and plaque(s)were observed in bilateral common carotid arteries. Results The hypertension history, smoke history, waistline body mass index(BMI)and the atherosclerosis were all more marked in subjects with IGR than those in NGT(all P
